Whistler is a place known for its penchant for adventure. It’s a place where you can rip down a mountain, zipline between them, climb them, explore them, the list goes on. However, that energetic charge that propels people in Whistler has to be refuelled, and you’ll find people are just as passionate about their downtime as they are about their adventure time.
Enter the sauna.
A Little Sauna History
Saunas have a history dating back over 2,000 years, with their origins rooted in Finland, where they were an essential part of daily life. The earliest saunas were simple pits dug into the ground, later evolving into wooden structures heated by wood-burning stoves. Traditionally, they served not only as a place for relaxation but also for hygiene, childbirth and spiritual rituals.
As saunas spread beyond Scandinavia, they adapted to different cultures, leading to variations like the Russian banya, Turkish hammam, and Indigenous American sweat lodge. Saunas also have a strong affinity with the ski scene, and in Whistler, their popularity surged in the 70s at the same time as shag carpets and A-frame cabins.
Today, saunas are having a bit of a renaissance. Online searches for the word “sauna” have gone up around 42% and the Wall Street Journal recently penned a piece on how business meetings in Silicon Valley are now being held in them. Well, in a place where meetings sometimes happen on chairlifts and gondolas, saunas aren’t a big leap.
Whether you’re seeking a traditional Finnish sauna, a backcountry experience, or a luxurious spa retreat, Whistler has it all. Here’s your guide to the best saunas in Whistler, featuring everything from rustic wood-fired escapes to high-end resort experiences.

They offer 75-minute, drop-in sessions, and one-hour and 20-minute privates, available from January to April. Experience the time-honoured practice of “Löyly” where water meets hot rocks to create an invigorating steam that melts away stress and tension. When you’re nice and hot, head outside and breathe in the fresh, alpine air, jump in a cold plunge or go for a bracing snow angel.
What to Expect:
- Wood-fired sauna with a rustic ambiance
- Surrounded by pristine wilderness
- Ideal for adventure lovers seeking a remote wellness experience
- Note that there’s a “warming hut” that serves as a change room and that there are no showers
Tip From a Local:
“Don’t skip the cold plunge! After a good sweat, take a snow roll or a dip in our plunge tubs. The hot-cold contrast isn’t just a thrill; it’s great for circulation, muscle recovery and mood-boosting. It’s all part of the Nordic way!” – Hadi Alim Marketing Coordinator at The Finnish Sauna.
How to Book:
You can opt for a 75-minute Community Sauna (non-private) and connect with fellow adventurers in a warm, inviting atmosphere for $32 per person. Or, you can make it a Private Sauna for up to 12 people for $360 for those special occasions or group outings. It’s best to book online ahead of time to secure your spot and avoid disappointment if you get there and the sauna is full for the day!
For the full Nordic experience, there’s a package that bundles a trail ticket, rental equipment (cross-country ski or snowshoe), and a sauna session.
2. Scandinave Spa Whistler – A Thermal Journey
If you’re looking for the quintessential sauna experience in Whistler, Scandinave Spa should be at the top of your list. This iconic spa is known for its hot-cold-relax cycle, which they call a thermal journey. This involves rotating between hot saunas and steams, cold plunges and tranquil relaxation areas amidst the old-growth forest of Lost Lake.

No tech is allowed at the 25,000-square-foot spa, giving you the chance to digitally detox and revel in some quiet time with views over the rugged Coast Mountain range. You can easily while away the hours at the spa, especially if you also book a massage treatment.
What to Expect:
- Traditional Finnish dry saunas and eucalyptus steam rooms
- Cold plunge pools and hot baths for the full Nordic therapy experience
- Hammocks, solarium and fire pit areas to relax
- A silence policy for a deeply immersive and peaceful atmosphere
Tip From a Local:
“Don’t rush. Leave yourself at least three hours to properly cycle through the thermal journey and relax surrounded by incredible scenery. If you can, visit midweek when it tends to be quieter.” – Arden Thorne, Coordinator, Content Marketing at Tourism Whistler.
How to Book:
You can book a Thermal Journey with or without a reservation, or package it with a massage (prices start at $103). It’s located a five-minute drive north of Whistler Village, so you can drive, catch a cab or you could consider a walk along the Valley Trail to get there.
3. Canadian Wilderness Adventures – Snowshoe & Sauna Experience
For those seeking an adventurous twist on the sauna experience, Canadian Wilderness Adventures has a brand-new Snowshoe and Sauna Tour. They take guests out into the pristine Callaghan Valley for a snowshoe along the Medicine Trail before relaxing in one of three, wood-fired barrel saunas tucked into the snow and forest.

There’s something about the combination of forest therapy that feels like the perfect setup for the mind and body before a sauna. The Medicine Trail weaves its way along an old trapper’s path amongst giant cedar, fir and hemlock trees and includes a healing tea made from the plants in the area. The approximate timing is around 45 minutes on snowshoes and 45 minutes in the sauna (there’s an outdoor fire and relaxation zone for those sauna breaks). Overall, this tour takes three and a half hours and includes transport from Whistler Village and snowshoe use.
What to Expect:
- Wood-fired barrel sauna in a beautiful, remote mountain setting
- A unique midday or après-ski adventure
- No plunge pool, but lots of snow
- A small change room and sauna bucket shower (on a pulley)
- You can bring your own towel or rent one
Tip From a Local:
“A true wilderness sauna experience. No frills. Just nature at its best.” – Kristal Taylor, Director of Sales & Marketing at Canadian Wilderness Adventures.

4. Hotels with Saunas – Luxury Meets Relaxation
There are three, high-end hotels in Whistler that have barrel saunas sitting invitingly on their pool decks; Four Seasons Resort Whistler, Fairmont Chateau Whistler and Nita Lake Lodge. For access to these saunas, you do have to be a guest at the hotel or book a spa treatment.

The Four Seasons and Fairmont have wood-fired, Finnish barrel saunas sitting next to their pool and hot tubs. There’s no cold plunge, but the outdoor, heated pools will likely feel refreshing after sweating it out in the sauna. You can use the spa facilities when you make a treatment booking, but be aware that there are a few peak periods during the year when they restrict it to hotel guests only.
At Nita Lake Lodge, the use of the barrel sauna is for guests only. It sits next to their plunge pool (not a cold plunge) and hot tub, which are lakeside, so many people like to go for that all-important cold plunge right in Nita Lake!
