During the winter months, snow can be heavy on Highway 99. Please check weather conditions before you leave and be prepared. If renting a vehicle ask about all-wheel drive options for better handling in the snow. Better yet, hop on one of the many shuttle buses (either from the airport or downtown) and let someone else do the driving. Once you arrive in Whistler, you won’t need a car anyway. If you stay in the Village, everything is within walking distance, and many of the hotels offer a complimentary shuttle service to get you to the lifts. Whistler’s transit system makes frequent scheduled stops throughout the Whistler Valley from 5:30 a.m. to 3:00 a.m., 365 days a year. Highway 99 Improvement Project
The Highway from Horseshoe Bay to Whistler, more commonly referred to as the “Sea to Sky Highway”, is undergoing a $600 million upgrade to increase the road's safety, reliability and capacity. The project is almost done and scheduled for completion in late 2009 - just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Project benefits include:
- A straighter highway and improved sightlines, creating more consistent driving speeds and shorter travel times
- 80 kilometres of new passing lanes between Horseshoe Bay and Whistler
- Shoulder and centreline rumble strips and additional median barriers
- Wider shoulders for improved safety and accommodation for cyclists and disabled vehicles
- Enhanced monitoring of road conditions by electronic weather stations to improve highway maintenance response during winter weather

Highway Regulations in British Columbia
Highways in British Columbia are safe and modernized. Canadian highway regulations may differ from where you are from. Please note:
- The speed limit is generally 80 kilometres per hour (watch for speed limit signs near construction areas)
- Speed limits are in metric
- Seat belts are mandatory
- Use headlights even in daylight
- Roads can be slippery even in the summer months
- Infant car seats are required for children weighing up to 9 kg / 20 pounds
